The Conference of Þjóðarspegillinn | October 30, 2026
Þjóðarspegillinn is an annual conference of the School of Social Sciences at the University of Iceland and an important forum for sharing knowledge and innovation. The conference is open to all and is intended as a dynamic conversation with society beyond the walls of the university. The conference brings together researchers, graduate students and professionals. It features both scholarly and practice-oriented presentations that illuminate society from diverse perspectives.
The aim of Þjóðarspegillinn is to strengthen the dissemination of social science knowledge, create space for critical and constructive dialogue, and contribute to a deeper understanding of Icelandic society.
Conference Location
The conference will be held at the University of Iceland. See here for photos of the buildings and information on where the conference rooms are located.
Abstract
Participants are encouraged to submit clear and concise abstracts for presentations that align with the aims of Þjóðarspegillinn. Abstracts may be based on empirical research, theoretical or conceptual development, systematic reviews or meta-analyses.
Guidelines for abstract submission
Introduction or background: Briefly explain the context of the topic. Why is it important, and what knowledge, debate, or societal issue does it address?
Objective or research question: State the main aim of the presentation, the research question, or the theoretical issue being addressed.
Method, approach, or material: Briefly describe the method, theoretical approach, data, sources, or material on which the presentation is based. For theoretical or conceptual presentations, this section may outline the key concepts, theories, or line of argument.
Findings, contribution, or main argument: Summarise the main findings, expected scholarly contribution, or central argument of the presentation. Avoid general statements such as “findings will be discussed”; instead, indicate clearly what the presentation contributes to the discussion.
Conclusion and societal relevance: This section is optional. Include it if you wish to highlight the significance and societal relevance of your contribution. E.g. what are the implications of the findings, argument, or theoretical approach for the social sciences, professional practice, policy, or society more broadly?
Abstracts must be between 170 and 250 words long.
Each author may present only one paper, even if they are a co-author on other papers.
Each individual may be an author or co-author on a maximum of three abstracts.
Guidelines for Presenters
Each presentation is allocated 20 minutes: approximately 15 minutes for the presentation itself and 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Please keep within the allocated time to ensure that the session runs according to schedule.
We recommend bringing your presentation on a USB flash drive. It is also advisable to have a backup copy available elsewhere, such as in your email or cloud storage, in case of technical difficulties.
To ensure that sessions start on time, presenters are kindly asked to arrive at least 10 minutes before their session begins. This will allow sufficient time to set up presentations, test the projector, and make sure everything is ready.
We recommend saving your slides in both PowerPoint and PDF formats in case formatting or fonts appear differently on another computer.
Presenters are asked to introduce themselves to the session chair upon arrival. The session chair helps keep track of time and ensures that the session runs according to schedule.
Special Sessions – Pre‑arranged
If participants wish to organize their own session, or a special session, they can indicate this in the submission system when submitting their abstract. Please include the agreed session title and the name of the session chair. All participants in a special session must submit their own abstracts individually. Participants should select “Special Session” under “Categories” in the submission system and enter the agreed session title and the name of the session chair. The conference committee may add presentations to special sessions when it fits well with the overall program.
